Bihar

Bihar, endowed with hard working people, secular ethos, abundant natural resources, fertile land, iron ore and coal, remains one of the most backward states in India. Characterized by corruption and misrule for decades since independence,Bihar is slowly but surely taking rapid strides and becoming an economic power-house!
Bihar-the seat of learning in ancient India is transforming itself into a modern society with high literacy, lower infant mortality and industrial growth. Because of inadequate employment opportunities,Biharis are migrating to Maharashtra,Gujrat ,Punjab and Bengal in search of livelihood.
Bihar should take advantage of the present global scenario and invest in hi-tech areas like IT,renewable sources of energy, food processing and high value added products like steel, transportation, pharmaceuticals, textiles and communications. It should cut  bureaucracy and red-tape. It should create an investor friendly environment and encourage FDI in core ares. Biharis are known for their entrepreneurial skills and occupy important positions in academia, industry, finance and health sectors all over the world! They should be invited to invest in their home state.
Casteism is the Achilles heel of Bihar and should be wiped out in a short time.Private armies, naxalites and mafias should be firmly told to lay down arms and join the mainstream.
I am confident that under Nitish Kumar, Bihar will soon take its rightful place among-st Indian states!

Indian Budget 2013-14

I am reminded of the Italian budgets during Berlusconi's tenure as PM which brought bankruptcy and ruin to Italy! I think we are headed the same way. Manmohan-Montek-Chidambaram economics zindabad! Their recipe is simple 'eat your cake and have it too'. Let us make merry now and let the future generations pay for it.
Defence-2trillion crores(kickbacks?), education-65000 crores, sports development-250 crores-excellent! Are missiles and choppers more important than winning medals in Olympics?
The budget has failed to address the structural impediments in the economy- rising inequalities, industrial sickness, inflation, low investor confidence, rising fiscal deficit, unemployment and lop-sided development! By trying to boost the services sector will not help boost growth.
There is nothing in the budget to stimulate inclusive growth. Small scale sector is reeling from decline in sales, exports and credit squeeze. Large parts of the country are suffering from drought but who cares-Planning commision has spent Rs.25 crores on renovating its toilets to impress IMF&WB officials! 14 year olds are committing suicide due to our archaic education system.
I foresee increase in unemployment, inflation and widening fiscal deficit if this budget is passed in the present shape. I earnestly request all the opposition MPs to do their homework well and pass drastic cut motions! Nothing less than the future of the country is at stake.
Even God-almighty cannot save the present government from a thrashing in the 2014 polls!

Canto IV - The Vision and the BoonPage 344

The massive barrier-breakers of the world
And wrestlers with destiny in her lists of will,
The labourers in the quarries of the gods,
The messengers of the Incommunicable,
The architects of immortality.
Into the fallen human sphere they came,
Faces that wore the Immortal's glory still,
Voices that communed still with the thoughts of God,
Bodies made beautiful by the spirit's light,
Carrying the magic word, the mystic fire,
Carrying the Dionysian cup of joy,
Approaching eyes of a diviner man,
Lips chanting an unknown anthem of the soul,
Feet echoing in the corridors of Time.
High priests of wisdom, sweetness, might and bliss,
Discoverers of beauty's sunlit ways
And swimmers of Love's laughing fiery floods
And dancers within rapture's golden doors,
Their tread one day shall change the suffering earth
And justify the light on Nature's face.
Although Fate lingers in the high Beyond
And the work seems vain on which our heart's force was spent,
All shall be done for which our pain was borne.
Even as of old man came behind the beast
This high divine successor surely shall come
Behind man's inefficient mortal pace,
Behind his vain labour, sweat and blood and tears:
He shall know what mortal mind barely durst think,
He shall do what the heart of the mortal could not dare.
Inheritor of the toil of human time,
He shall take on him the burden of the gods;
All heavenly light shall visit the earth's thoughts,
The might of heaven shall fortify earthly hearts;
Earth's deeds shall touch the superhuman's height,
Earth's seeing widen into the infinite.
Heavy unchanged weighs still the imperfect world;

Can Monsanto Ever Be Stopped? Supreme Court Looks to Rule in Favor GMOs
Written by Jill Ettinger
Supreme Court
The case of Bowman v. Monsanto, now underway in the Supreme Court, could set a precedent for the patent rights on seeds. If Bowman wins, the ruling could drastically influence the way Monsanto and other biotech firms do business, limiting their ability to claim ownership over anything that can replicate itself indefinitely. But how likely is it that Monsanto, the largest seed company in the world, will actually be defeated?
According to the New York Times, last week at the Supreme Court as arguments were under way, signs indicated a latent victory for Monsanto including long-winded and one-sided arguments allowed by the Justices from the defendants. "A lawyer for Monsanto, Seth P. Waxman, a former United States solicitor general, was allowed to talk uninterrupted for long stretches, which is usually a sign of impending victory."
The case came to the Supreme Court after Vernon Hugh Bowman, an Indiana farmer, was ordered by a federal judge to pay Monsanto more than $84,000 for allegedly saving seeds he bought from Monsanto and planted after the initial crop he was contracted for. After his Monsanto crops were harvested, Bowman purchased seeds from a grain elevator that were a mix of a number of different seed varieties, including Monsanto's Roundup Ready soy, which he planted. The distinction is a slight technicality, according to Monsato, and the company insists Bowman is still financially obligated to pay for misuse of the seeds. The practice of "seed-saving" is a violation of Monsanto's strict patent rules and the giant biotech company has successfully sued more than 140 farmers for such violations. Bowman cited his legal right to replant those seeds as part of a doctrine called patent exhaustion, which, he claimed, allowed him to use the seeds he purchased legally from the grain elevator without being obligated to pay Monsanto.
The United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit upheld the Indiana federal judge's ruling, citing that Bowman violated Monsanto's patent rights when planting the seeds. Bowman has hung his hopes on the Supreme Court—not just as a possible win for himself—but for farmers everywhere who have struggled against the strict rules, fines and restrictions that come with planting patented genetically modified seeds. Monsanto's Roundup Ready soybean seed is the particular seed in this case. Developed in just 1996, it is now grown on more than 90 percent of all of the nation's soybean farms and has become a huge part of the American diet in many processed forms as well as a staple in livestock feed.
According to the Times, Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. asked Bowman's attorney why in the world anybody would "spend any money to try to improve the seed if as soon as they sold the first one anybody could grow more and have as many of those seeds as they want?” Justice Elena Kagan said contracts, instead of patent rights, which Bowman's attorney presented as an alternative seemed "peculiarly insufficient" and that any escaped seeds would make the contract "worthless." Justice Stephen G. Breyer offered his opinion on what Bowman could have done with the seeds: “You can feed it to animals, you can feed it to your family, make tofu turkeys,” but, he said, using a disturbing comparison, "you can’t pick up those seeds that you’ve just bought and throw them in a child’s face. You can’t do that because there’s a law that says you can’t do it. Now, there’s another law that says you cannot make copies of a patented invention.”
Justice Clarence Thomas has not recused himself from the proceedings despite spending four years as legal council for Monsanto. But even if he did, the federal government still supports Monsanto, even though the human and environmental health risks connected with GMO seeds continue to come to light. Farmers promised decreased use of pesticides have had to increase applications and bring on even more potent herbicides and pesticides to combat the growing number of insects and weeds that have become resistant to Monsanto's Roundup. Health issues including obesity, diabetes, digestive and reproductive disorders, organ damage and some cancers have all been connected to GMO seeds and the pesticides commonly used on them.
Monsanto was recently instrumental in defeating California's Proposition 37—a measure on last November's ballot that could have made it the first state to require mandatory labeling of all foods containing genetically modified ingredients. Californians and anti-GMO activists around the country were hopeful and confident the measure would pass—putting the state in the company of more than 60 countries with GMO regulations. And despite being outspent by the opposition by nearly five to one, hopes remained incredibly high as the votes came in. But Monsanto, along with other big-ag and food corporations, succeeded in defeating the measure by six percentage points thanks to a campaign strategy that was highly deceptive; the "No on 37" advertisements never mentioned genetically modified ingredients, but instead positioned the measure as a "costly food label bill" regardless of the lack of any sound evidence that it would cost taxpayers a single penny.
And while it may take the Supreme Court until this summer to rule on Bowman v. Monsanto, it's looking like the giant will pull out another victory. For the time being, anyway.  For those who want to see transparency in the U.S. food system and are now perhaps, growing rather tired of the arduous processes and the seemingly unstoppable force that is Monsanto, here's a little reminder from one of the greatest and unlikeliest of victors, Gandhi:  “When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love have always won. There have been tyrants and murderers, and for a time, they can seem invincible, but in the end, they always fall. Think of it—always.”

follow your calling !

'All are gifted, some never open the package!'The great secret of life is to do what you enjoy and you will realize that you are guided by an invisible hand. In the present times, the greatest cause of human misery is that we allow others to live our life for us. We are brought up to believe that to conform is a source of safety and security. Nothing can be farther from the truth! The Bhagwad Gita says 'Better to die following tthe law of your own nature than to succeed following an alien law'. Unfortunately even countries like America and England which prided themselves on their individuality have sunk to the depths of materialism and uniformity.
Our ancient cultures tell us that every individual is unique and celebrated the uniqueness. Every individual had the fullest opportunity to explore his full potential. The works of art and literature of the ancient times remain unsurpassed even today!
'Stifling of the individual is the stifling of God in man!'Sri Aurobindo.
'Never follow the crowd, be alone and fight if you think you are right!' Abraham Lincoln. It is always the individual who is the explorer, discoverer, artist, musician or scientist.''Genius starts a new wave, average talent stereotypes it,till fresh genius creates a new wave!'Sri Aurobindo

positive discrimination

Almost 25% of the Indian population comprises of SCs&STs who have been exploited for centuries by the upper castes! They are forced to do manual scavenging, skinning animals, cleaning toilets and other lowly tasks. Even after 66 years of Independence, they dont have access to education, drinking water, housing or health facilities. They are the first to be displaced from their habitat and land in the name of development. Their women are subjected to rape, indignities, paraded naked and not allowed to marry outside their community. At times they are sold to brothels for prostitution.
Till such times, these marginalized classes join the mainstream,it will be essential to continue the policy of 'reservation'. However care should be taken to exclude the'creamy layer' among-st them. A periodic review should be conducted to assess the implementation of reservation benefits. Those communities which have come into the mainstream should be excluded and those lagging behind should be encouraged.

Our Constitution envisions an inclusive society based on the principles of liberty, equality, fraternity and justice! Let us work together to make this dream a reality.

The power of youth

'The future belongs to the brave, the creative and the daring!'sri aurobindo. The characteristic of youth is energy and experimentation. The youth comprise the vast majority of the population in most countries of the world. They are the driving force behind all popular uprisings all over the world. They are enterprising,tech-savvy and idealistic-ingredients for change!
The youth are driving innovation, fueling investment and evolving new paradigms in science, business, literature, music and politics. They have no time for the status-quo!
Anybody who can catch the imagination of the youth will command the future!

participatory democracy

The main drawback of the modern system of parliamentary democracy is the inability of the people to influence decision making! Democracy today is the rule of the politician, the bureaucrat and the businessman who are almost corrupt. Their only job is to perpetuate the status-quo and retain power. The masses everywhere are feeling neglected and exploited. It is this discontent which is reflected in popular uprising all over the world!
Ancient cultures laid stress on participation of the masses in decision making. The Greek,Indian and the Islamic cultures gave lot of importance to the individual and his harmonious development. In India, the monarch was a figure head whose sole job was to follow the Dharma. The real power rested with the masses who actively participated in the functioning of the government. Taxes, land issues, family matters and religious matters were all decided by the people. Civil unrest was unknown and people had a sense of belonging. There were periods in India when there was no ruler at the top but the people prospered!
In modern India there have been instances when illiterate or persons with a shady past have succeeded in becoming PM! Competence or character are no longer the criteria but the whims of a few individuals decide the choice of PM!
If democracy is to survive,it has to become transparent and participatory!

ma durga

Mother Durga!

India lies now in selfishness and fearfulness and littleness. Make us great, make our efforts great, our hearts vast, make us true to our resolve. May we no longer desire the small, void of energy, given to laziness, stricken with fear.

Mother Durga!

Extend wide the power of Yoga. We are thy Aryan children, develop in us again the lost teaching, character, strength of intelligence, faith and devotion, force of austerity, power of chastity and true knowledge, bestow all that upon the world. To help mankind, appear, O Mother of the world, dispel all ills.

Mother Durga!

Slay the enemy within, then root out all obstacles outside. May the noble heroic mighty Indian race, supreme in love and unity, truth and strength, arts and letters, force and knowledge ever dwell in its holy woodlands, its fertile fields under its sky-scraping hills, along the banks of its pure-streaming rivers. This is our prayer at the feet of the Mother. Make thyself manifest

politics of cooperation

An era has ended and a new one is beginning-an era which will decide the destiny of the human race! Mankind today is facing a crisis of unprecedented proportions-moral,spiritual,economic,cultural and geographical. How we cope with the present situation will determine our future. If we are not to perish like the earlier civilizations, we will have take a paradigm leap! We have nothing to loose and a brave new world to gain.
The old politics of confrontation and division is bankrupt and has only resulted in consolidation of wealth and power in a few hands and the majority being reduced to serfs.
All over the world, people are awakening to a new dawn and eagerly demanding their share in the world's wealth. The old power structures-politics,corporations,religions,financial institutions and the armaments lobbies are quacking in their boots!
It is time to change the political discourse and talk the language of cooperation and union! No country in the world is today in a position to tackle its problems single handedly. It is time to start sharing wealth, knowhow, cultures, languages and resources ,if we have to emerge out of this crisis!
'Those nations and individuals will command the future, who can re-invent themselves!' Sri Aurobindo

reduce defense expenditure

The national budget is 4 days away! The FM has a splendid opportunity to give a new direction to the Indian economy. Agriculture, education, women's issues and eradicating undernourishment should be the priority areas while drastically curtailing defense and administrative expenses!
Defense spending comprises 20% of our budget. A 10% reduction could free Rs. 50000 crores to be used for nation building purposes!
A policy decision should be taken to drastically reduce imports of military hardware and serious attempts should be made to explore private participation in the defense sector. This would not only give a boost to the economy but also facilitate R&D in the private sector. If Iran can manufacture air crafts I see no reason why India cant. I am sure if India curtails its defense spending Pakistan will also follow suit and the rest of the world will also re-examine its priorities!
I hope the Government makes its last budget a revolutionary one!

john denver

He was born in the Bitterroot Valley in the early morning rain
Wild geese over the water headin north and home again
Bringin a warm wind from the south
Bringin the first taste of the spring
His mother took him to her breast and softly she did sing

Oh Montana, give this child a home
Give him the love of a good family and a woman of his own
Give him a fire in his heart, give him a light in his eyes
Give him the wild wind for a brother and the wild Montana skies

His mother died that summer and he never learned to cry
He never knew his father and he never did ask why
He never knew the answers that would make an easy way
But he learned to know the wilderness and to be a man that way

His mothers brother took him in to family and his home
Gave him a hand that he could lean on and a strength to call his own
And he learned to be a farmer and he learned to love the land
And he learned to read the seasons and he learned to make a stand

Oh Montana, give this child a home
Give him the love of a good family and a woman of his own
Give him a fire in his heart, give him a light in his eyes
Give him the wild wind for a brother and the wild Montana skies

On the eve of his 21st birthday he set out on his own
He was 30 years and runnin when he found his way back home
Ridin a storm across the mountains and an aching in his heart
Said he came to turn the pages and to make a brand new start

Now he never told a story of the time that he was gone
Some say he was a lawyer, some say he was a John
There was somethin in the city that he said he couldnt breathe
And there was somethin in the country that he said he couldnt leave

Oh Montana, give this child a home
Give him the love of a good family and a woman of his own
Give him a fire in his heart, give him a light in his eyes
Give him the wild wind for a brother and the wild Montana skies

Now some say he was crazy and theyre glad that he is gone
But some of us miss him and well try to carry on
Giving a voice to the forest, giving a voice to the dawn
Giving a voice to the wilderness and the land that he lived onmontana sky

Oh Montana, give this child a home
Give him the love of a good family and a woman of his own
Give him a fire in his heart, give him a light in his eyes
Give him the wild wind for a brother and the wild Montana skies

Oh Montana, give this child a home
Give him the love of a good family and a woman of his own
Give him a fire in his heart, give him a light in his eyes
Give him the wild wind for a brother and the wild Montana skies

Where The Mind is Without Fear

WHERE the mind is without fear and the head is held high
      Where knowledge is free
Where the world has not been broken up into fragments
      By narrow domestic walls
Where words come out from the depth of truth
Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection
Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way
Into the dreary desert sand of dead habit
Where the mind is led forward by thee
      Into ever-widening thought and action
Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake.

rural development and youth

70% of India's population lives in rural areas in India. The main source of livelihood in villages is agriculture. Being dependent on the rain-gods, it cannot support a large number of people. People are forced to migrate to cities and towns in search of livelihood thereby leading to overcrowding and consequent problems. The environment in rural India is overwhelming and is lacking in the basic amenities of life-power,drinking water, schools, sanitation, public health facilities and roads. The number of school dropouts is very large and early marriages are common.
If India is to progress the youth of India will have to join in the task of nation building. Like in many countries in Europe,China and Japan, the youth will have to participate in rural development. If every graduate decides to spend 1 year in a village of his choice and participate in rural activities,it can make an enormous difference!  The youth can share their knowledge and energy with the rural folks and help them to update their skills. The youth can contribute significantly in areas like education, health, power, environment and marketing. This can lead to a win-win situation with both sides benefiting from the exchange. Later on when the same youth occupy decision making positions they will have a better perspective on the real developmental issues!

The people of India

The people are supreme!'The proletariat is a torpid mass, anyone who can inspire it will command the future!' sri aurobindo.
Our Constitution clearly emphasizes the predominance of the will of the people which is intended to be reflected by the Legislature
Parliament and all other elected bodies.
The people of India, like any other people are peace-loving by nature. All they want is a decent livelihood, security, harmony and a bright future for their children! They are very kind-hear ted, generous, tolerant and law abiding people. Majority of them are dependent on agriculture and are facing tremendous hardships because of the neglect for ages by the government. Everyday is a bitter struggle for survival. Malnutrition, hunger, disease, illiteracy and exploitation is their daily lot. They are being forcibly driven to the cities and towns due to poverty, forcible displacement by the government and lack of opportunities. Sometimes they are compelled to take up arms by joining extremist organisations to protect themselves from oppressive forces. The women and children are the most vulnerable sections of society.Gender-violence,prostitution,child labor and other forms of brutality are common at the grass roots level.
If their grievances are not addressed quickly,it wont be long before they start taking matters in their own hands and revolt!

supreme court of india

The Supreme Court of India came into existence on 28th January 1950 at N.Delhi. The Supreme Court is the guardian of the Constitution. But for a few aberrations, the Supreme Court has performed its constitutional obligations honorably  It has given landmark judgments upholding individual liberty, freedom of expression, secularism, rule of law, women empowerment, worker's rights, positive discrimination and accountability to the Constitution. Except for a short period in its history,The Supreme Court has been giving a liberal and progressive interpretation to the Constitution! The Preamble to the Constitution has been its pole star!
By and large the Judges and lawyers of the Supreme Court have been persons of high integrity and character. If India is still a vibrant democracy,it is in no small measure due to the high standards set by the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court judgments are cited in many countries of the world.
The Supreme Court has time and again reiterated that the Indian Constitution is a dynamic and evolving one with the times. The Supreme Court has frowned upon arbitrariness, abuse of power, corruption, preventive detention and gender violence.
In the present period of transition, the Supreme Court of India is destined to play a crucial role!

hero-worship

Hero worship is alien to the Indian ethos and culture! The Indian people believe in divine worship and not individual worship. Vivekananda,Tilak and Sri Aurobindo never tried to promote the cult of the individual. They underwent tremendous suffering for their motherland without complaint or trying to promote themselves as saviors or messiahs.
It was gandhi who encouraged hero-worship portraying himself as an avtaar! The British abetted him since they wanted to promote European culture and destroy the Indian ethos. After independence Nehru projected himself as the messiah, a practice which was followed by his heirs, since they wanted to perpetuate dynasty rule. An attempt was systematically made to create the false impression that the destiny of India and the nehru-gandhi dynasty was interlinked and India would perish without them! The western media has also been creating the same impression amongst people overseas.
Our Constitution does not give primacy to any individual but to the parliament and all institutions created under the Constitution! If Democracy is to survive in India, all political parties should reject the cult of individual and promote democratic values.

The Indian Parliament

Parliament-foundation stone of democracy, law&order, secularism and unity of India. It is comprised of the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha. The Lok Sabha comprises of 542 members elected from all parts of India and the Rajya Sabha comprises of members of different parties from all states. Both the houses are important for the smooth functioning of India. Both houses have persons of the highest integrity and patriotism but of late their number is dwindling.
Under the Constitution the Parliament is purely a legislative body whose job is to frame legislation suitable for the whole country. The Constitution envisions that all legislation should be passed by consensus. Unfortunately in the present times partisan interests are prevailing over national interest. A lot of time is wasted in unnecessary disruptions and walk outs. Important legislations are pending approval by Parliament on important national issues. As a consequence of the paralysis in Parliament extra-constitutional mafias have emerged who are subverting democracy and the Constitution! The Supreme Court, which is the guardian of the Constitution, has been doing a great job in preserving democracy and rule of law in the country.
I earnestly appeal to all the members of our Parliament to do their job sincerely and honestly so that future Indian generations can be proud of our democracy!

telengana

The popular opinion is for creation of Telengana! Smaller states are the need of the hour. Experience has shown that smaller states tend to perform better than larger states. Uttarakhand,Jharkhand,HP and Goa have proved beyond doubt that people want smaller states. The best period in India was not the Mughal,Ashoka or Chandragupta but when there were extremely small kingdoms, not larger than a modern district! This was the time when India was rich culturally, morally, materially and spiritually! There was continuous interaction between people within and without India.
Some mischievous elements are trying to suggest that today's bomb blast is the work of terrorists! This is far from the truth. This is only an indication of things to come. All over the world people are demanding the right of self-determination. In all probability the center is likely to send the armed forces to control the unrest. This portends ill for the diversity, unity and integrity of India.
I strongly appeal to all political parties to read the writing on the wall and give the people Telengana! Please maintain peace and calm under all circumstances.

Nuclear Disarmament

The world is on the edge of a precipice-anything can happen! There are 500000 nuclear weapons in the world today and the number is increasing everyday. Iran,N.Korea,Israel and S.Africa have joined the club. It is futile to expect any country to stop testing nuclear weapons without total nuclear disarmament. The primary responsibility rests on the US,Russia and China.
It has become a child's play to make a nuclear device today! The know-how is freely available to anyone who wants it! Imagine if a terrorist outfit were to get hold of it. There have been reports of nuclear mishaps all across the world. Armageddon will follow in the event of the slightest mistake by any nation!
If the US and Russia take an initiative to start reducing their stockpile, the rest of the world will surely follow! For the price of a nuclear device,10 million malnourished children can be fed for a year!
Give peace a chance!

The Mother's Birthday

But Savitri answered from her violent heart,--
Her voice was calm, her face was fixed like steel:
"Once my heart chose and chooses not again.
The word I have spoken can never be erased,
It is written in the record book of God.
The truth once uttered, from the earth's air effaced,
By mind forgotten, sounds immortally
For ever in the memory of Time.
Once the dice fall thrown by the hand of Fate
In an eternal moment of the gods.
My heart has sealed its troth to Satyavan:
Its signature adverse Fate cannot efface,
Its seal not Fate nor Death nor Time dissolve.
Those who shall part who have grown one being within?
Death's grip can break our bodies, not our souls;
If death take him, I too know how to die.
Let Fate do with me what she will or can;
I am stronger than death and greater than my fate;
My love shall outlast the world, doom falls from me
Helpless against my immortality.
Fate's law may change, but not my spirit's will."
