plight of refugees in india

Refugees who fled their own countries to escape persecution and death and came to India with the hope of a better future are facing repatriation or a fugitive's life here. There are thousands of persons both Hindus and Muslims who have come from Afghanistan,Bangladesh, Burma,Pakistan,Srilanka and Tibet and are settled in Rajasthan,HP,W.Bengal.Assam,Manipur,Delhi and Karnataka but who are not eligible for any legal rights. They cannot buy property, rations or freely travel in India. Their children cannot study beyond 10th or apply for government jobs. They are not entitled for electricity connection or open bank accounts.
The Supreme Court has extended the protection of Fundamental Rights under The Constitution to include foreign citizens also.
India is a signatory to the International convention on refugees but does not adhere to any of its terms and conditions. It always takes a high moral ground in protesting against violation of rights of foreign nationals but discriminates against refugees living in India.
There is a need for a serious debate about the rights of persons of Indian origin who desire to live in the land of their forefathers!

mother's arrival in pondicherry

The Mother arrived in Pondicherry on 24th April 1920 never to leave again! She lived in Pondicherry till she passed away on 17th November 1973. Sri Aurobindo said " The Mother's consciousness and mine are the same!" The Mother said "Without him I exist not, without me he is unmanifest!"
The Ashram came into existence after the arrival of the Mother. It was she who gave a practical shape to the Master's teachings! All the disciples had to work a minimum of 10 hours everyday as a part of their sadhana. She would allocate work to each sadhak in accordance with his aptitude and temperament. She herself toiled endlessly with little food and rest." All my realizations would have remained unaccomplished without the Mother!" Sri Aurobindo
After the passing away of Sri Aurobindo on 5th December 1950,the Mother took complete charge of the Ashram and continued to guide the sadhaks.During her lifetime the number of sadhaks increased from 10 to almost 10000.
In 1967 she created Auroville,an international township near Pondicherry, where people from all over the world could live and work for the supramental realization.
She also took active interest in world events and intervened from time to time whenever the adverse forces threatened to engulf the world.
" The Supramental manifestation is no longer a dream but is a certainty and a time will come when everyone will be forced to acknowledge its presence!" The Mother

hanuman jayanti

Today is Hanuman Jayanti-it marks the birth of Hanuman, the monkey God. He is also known as Maruti,Bajrangbali and Anjaneya. He is supposed to be the son of the wind God Marut and Anjana. Legend has it that as a child he tried to gobble the Sun. He is the embodiment of celibacy, strength and energy. He is worshiped in all parts of India.
He was the greatest devotee of Lord Rama and played a very vital role in the defeat of Ravana and the rescue of Mata Sita. He set fire to Lanka ,capital of Ravana, and razed it to the ground when Ravana set his tail alight. When Lakshman was injured Hanuman carried the Kishikandha mountain on his shoulders because he could not find the required plant which grew there.
Unfortunately today his name is being exploited by certain forces to oppress and kill persons belonging to minority communities, something which Hanuman would never approve of!

mental illness-causes and treatment

Mental illness or Neuroses still defies doctors and psychoanalysts. Anyone who does not confirm to the social norms is deemed to be mentally ill!To opt out of the rat race is considered an abnormality requiring treatment. In our amazing world mass murderers like Hitler,Stalin,Mao and George Bush are regarded as normal people while gifted people like Aaron Shwartz,Julian Assange,Mukul Shivputra and many others are regarded as mentally ill and fit to be kept in isolation. Statistics show that almost 40% of the world population has suffered from mental illness sometime or the other in their life.
The traditional methods of treatment include administration of tranquilizers, sedatives and ECT. Patients are confined in an institution in inhuman conditions, occasionally beaten up or tied to the bed and sometimes molested. They are shunned by family and friends alike which only aggravates their condition. It is well known that most of the drugs have severe side effects like dizziness, weight gain, loss of libido.irreversible kidney damage, blood pressure, diabetes and insomnia yet are routinely given to patients. Suicidal patients are administered ECT sometimes without anesthesia. In India there is a tie-up between hospitals, doctors, psychiatrists and even the guardians and the sole objective is to detain the patient as long as possible.
Dr.Stanislav Grof,an Austrian Psychiatrist has done pioneering work in the treatment of mental illness and contributed immensely to Trans-personal psychology-an emerging science. He advocates a combination of medicines with Yoga,a line of treatment which has had much success in The US.
So little is known about the human psyche yet Doctors claim the monopoly to "Treat" the mentally ill!

earth day

Save the Earth! It has become a fashionable cliche for NGOs and many others to earn a few bucks.Majority of the people in the world don't give a damn if the North Pole and the Himalayas vanish or the entire flora and fauna of the world is wiped out as long as they can buy a new car every year!
Rainfall is decreasing, summers are getting warmer, earthquakes are occurring in regions without any past history of seismic activity, our rivers and oceans are polluted, new pests and diseases are destroying crops yet the armaments and petroleum industry continues to increase its profits!
I think only a catastrophe can bring mankind to its senses!

kurien-step down

It is indeed a shame that a person facing charges of rape is continuing as Dy.Chairman of Rajya Sabha! it will be hypocrisy to demand death penalty for rapists while persons occupying high positions indulge in heinous offences with impunity. When Justice V. Ramaswamy was facing allegations of corruption,he was asked to cease sitting in court.
The Opposition should unitedly force Mr. Kurien to resign failing which they should boycott proceedings in Rajya Sabha. This will go a long way to show their sincerity towards protection of women.
It is common knowledge that many Ministers and senior officials indulge in extra-marital affairs and liaisons with journalists and others. There are serious allegations against senior Defense officers of pressurizing their subordinates to send their spouses for favors. Sexual harassment cases are on the rise. This portends ill for the future.
Let a few heads roll!

chanakya

Chanakya (370-283BCE) was the greatest strategist India has ever known. He proceeded Machiavelli by several centuries. However there was a crucial difference between the two. Chanakya was inspired by a vision whereas Machiavelli was a pure intellectual!
India at the time of Chanakya was a deeply fragmented society with all states being in a state of conflict. The Nanda rulers were the predominant power but were highly despotic. They were trying to impose an alien culture on the subject people.
Chanakya decided to take advantage of the raging discontent among the people and to get rid of the Nanda dynasty forever. His protege Chandragupta was born of a concubine but was extremely brave and fearless. Chanakya took him under his wing and shrewdly propelled him to the position of a emperor and destroyed the Nanda dynasty.
Chandragupta established the first indigenous empire in India based on principles laid down by Chanakya which survived for several centuries. During his tenure India enjoyed tremendous prosperity, harmony, unity and peace!
Chanakya's Arthashastra and Neetishastra are considered as masterpieces even today.

ambedkar jayanti-power to the powerless!

Babasaheb Ambedkar-architect of the Indian Constitution stood for equality, liberty, fraternity and social justice all his life! He toiled ceaselessly to empower the Dalits and the downtrodden. If Mayawati today can aspire to be PM it is in no small measure due to the efforts of Babasaheb. Babasaheb who himself had to suffer humiliation and discrimination for being born a scheduled caste, realized that India could not attain its full potential as long as it segregated one-sixth of its population to a animal existence. He was responsible for providing for reservation in public employment and education for the SCs&STs in the Constitution. After 63 years his dream of a united, cohesive and egalitarian society still remains a dream with majority of Indians still being denied the fruits of freedom.
Let us strive to realize Babasaheb's vision of a just society!

indian films

The films and arts are the mirror of a society! Indian films are representative of the unique diversity of Indian society. Each state produces films which represent its own cultural and social issues. Majority of the mainstream films are in Hindi since it has the largest following. The budget of an Indian film can vary from tens of millions to several thousand Rupees depending on the cast and the locale. Indian films now incorporate the latest techniques of direction, photography and shooting. Computers and lasers are used in a big way to attract the audience. Romance, comedy, action, thrillers and social issues comprise the theme of most films. Foreign films are slowly loosing their influence on the Indian psyche.
Low budget films like 3 Idiots, Chala Musaddi office office, Deul, Khuda ke vaste, Welcome,Iqbal and Dilwale Dulhaniya have become box-office hits. Unknown directors are producing films using simple equipment and uploading them on the internet without worrying about issues like censorship.
The audience today has a huge choice of films and actors and has become quite selective and discerning. Violence is slowly loosing its appeal and the audience want comedy, romance and visual attractions.
In my opinion the Indian film industry is entering its Golden era and can only attain
greater heights!

indo-german friendship

Both India and Germany are destined to play a leading role in the emerging world order! In the subjective age which is now dawning in the world, both countries will have to re-invent themselves to take maximum advantage of the new opportunities.
Germany has been famous for its philosophers, composers, scientists and businessmen while India has been renowned too for its ancient culture and arts. Schopenhauer,Nietzche,Jung,Einstein,Oppenheimer and Max Mueller were deeply influenced by Indian philosophy and acknowledged their debt to India. Companies like Hoechst,Daimler Benz ,Lufthansa and Deutch Bank have been an important presence in India for ages. Indian IT companies have a sizable presence in Germany. There is tremendous scope for cooperation in renewable energy, food processing, tourism,IT, entertainment, biotechnology and space research sectors.
India has a lot to learn from Germany-work ethic, discipline, spirit of inquiry, scientific temper and financial management while Germany can adopt Indian values-tolerance,secularism,assimilation and spirituality.
Germany under Chancellor Angela Merkel has been striving to improve relations with India and it remains for India to reciprocate!

happy gudi padwa

Ugadi or Gudi Padwa marks the beginning of New Year in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and parts of Karnataka.

This festival is known as Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra and Ugadi in Karnataka andAndhra Pradesh. It has become a custom to hold Kavi Sammelans (Poetry recitals) on this day.

Gudi Padwa is considered one of the foremost auspicious day in the year when people start new ventures. It is believed that Lord Brahma, created the world on this day and so he is worshiped especially at this time.

Gudi Padwa (Ugadi)

Lord Vishnu too is said to have incarnated as Matsya, the fish, on this day.

A gudi (banner) with a swastika -marked metal pot and silk cloth is raised to announce victory and joy. In Maharashtra, it is reminiscent of the valiant Marathas returning home from their successful expeditions of war. Maharashtrians take the opportunity to honour their favourite leader, Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on the occasion.

On the festival day, people decorate their houses with mango leaves and 'rangoli' designs, and pray for a prosperous new year. They visit the temples to see the yearly calendar 'Panchangasravanam' as priests makepredictions for the upcoming year.

It is a tradition to serve bitter leaves ofneem tree with jaggery as Prasad on Ugadi/Gudi Padwa.

Gudi Padwa is considered as an auspicious occasion to makeinvestments like buying a house, jewellery and other new things.

The festival is celebrated when the summers begin and the time for harvesting the crop arrives. The fragrance of ripening mangoes, jackfruit and other seasonal fruits fill the air with sweet smell.

Gudi Padwa, also known as Ugadi, is celebrated on the first day of the Hindu month of Chaitra shukla Padyami, which corresponds to end of March or beginning of April according to the Gregorian calendar. This festival marks the beginning of 'Vasant' or spring as well. The word 'padwa' is a Sanskrit word for crop, which literally means 'Pradurbhu.' This day also marks the end of one harvest and the beginning of a new one, which for an agricultural community would signify the beginning of a New Year. Gudi Padwa is celebrated at the end of the Rabi season.

Indian society is largely dependent on agriculture and that is the reason that harvests are celebrated with much fun and frolic in the country.

india-an alternative vision

Where The Mind is Without Fear

WHERE the mind is without fear and the head is held high
      Where knowledge is free
Where the world has not been broken up into fragments
      By narrow domestic walls
Where words come out from the depth of truth
Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection
Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way
Into the dreary desert sand of dead habit
Where the mind is led forward by thee
      Into ever-widening thought and action
Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake.
      Rabindranath Tagore

the samurai

The Samurai in Japan were the equivalent of The Kshatriya in ancient India. They were the warrior community in Japan and were instrumental for the defeat of Russia in the Russo-Japanese war in the 16th century. The Samurai stood for a strict code of conduct-honour,bravery,chivalry,team spirit and sacrifice! At that time Japan was the leading power in Asia and dominated most of South East Asia including China. The Emperor was God for the Samurai and to be obeyed at all costs.
With the advent of the US traders and army the influence of the Samurai declined and the Americans were able to persuade the Emperor to buy armaments and train the army using western methods. The Samurai stubbornly refused to bow to western commercialism and methods and continued with their ancient traditions till the very end.
With the extinction of The Samurai, Japan lost its fighting spirit and its high traditions!

kundalini-the awakening

Kundalini is the serpent power that resides in the base of the spine. It is usually dormant but can be awakened by the practice of Yoga. However it should be done with the guidance of a Master because it can be accompanied by a perilous upsetting and can cause even madness!
The Master ensures that the sadhak is able to awaken the Kundalini safely. Purification of the mind, vital, psychic and physical is absolutely imperative before the rising. Celibacy, purity of thought, speech and conduct is absolotely essential. Once risen the Kundalini pierces all the 5 centres and reaches the brahmarandhra, the lotus which is present at the top of the head.
The rising of the Kundalini confers supranormal powers on the sadhak including telepathy, vakshakti and even kinesis. The sadhak is then free to leave the Master and continue his sadhana on his own.
In the Integral Yoga the ascent has to be followed by the descent of higher planes of existence. The sadhak has not only to realize his own divinity but also force the Divine to descend in him.

shun pettiness

The world has become too petty! Everybody is preoccupied with thoughts of self, family and the petty comforts of life. Food, dress, study, career, wealth and sex have become the only all pervading considerations. From birth to death life has become one endless routine.Poetry, literature, music and art have all been trivialized to cater to popular taste. Anyone who tries to point to a sense of grandeur, nobility, purpose or sanctity is considered abnormal.More people are interested in Justin Bieber or Madonna than the works of Socrates,Aristotle or Vivekananda! Keeping up with the Joneses has become more important than living a cultured life. Good manners,Chivalry and Etiquette are regarded as archaic and obsolete. The barbarian rules!
"The greatest challenge of the 21st century is to revive the sense of the sacred!" Sri Aurobindo. Unless we realize that there is a higher and nobler purpose to life,we are doomed to destruction and extinction as a species. Life is not about acquiring more wealth but about realizing our latent divinity! Science has also reached a turning point and is finding that the reality is transcending the physical and material world!
Modern civilization has become too complex and cumbersome to be left to the whims of a few politicians and corporations. The present economic, political, moral and spiritual crisis is a wake up call!

oneness

" Sarva khalu idam brahma!" Verily all is the Brahman. Upanishads. Since time immemorial humanity has been seeking for its destiny. Man has been constantly striving for unity-mostly by mechanical means. One of the methods used even today is larger aggregates on the basis of shared interests. Asia, America, The Commonwealth,Europe,Africa and the erstwhile Soviet Union are all attempts in that direction. But they have all been failures because they have relied essentially on political and economic unity while neglecting the important spiritual dimension.
It is imperative that humanity realizes that the entire cosmos is an indivisible whole and we are a significant part of it. We have to transcend the barriers of geography, sex, culture, language, religion, wealth and politics to be able to speak in unison.
Modern science is moving towards unity and searching for the elusive origin of the universe! The origins are irrelevant but the future is of supreme importance."Human unity is inevitable in the nature of things. Only human imbecility and stupidity are the barriers in the way!" Sri Aurobindo

4th April 1910 Sri Aurobindo/s arrival in Pondicherry

Sri Aurobindo was sitting in the Karmayogin office at 4 Shyampukur Lane in Calcutta. It was the evening of 14 February in 1910. His young associate Ramachandra Majumdar brought the information that the police have issued an arrest warrant for Sri Aurobindo. “Go to Chandernagore” was the quiet voice he heard. Sri Aurobindo stayed in the French colony of Chandernagore from 15 February to 31 March 1910. But the place was not safe enough. He again heard the voice telling him: “Go to Pondicherry.”
Sri Aurobindo received the divine command to go to Pondicherry and soon he was there in the afternoon of 4th April 1910. This was the place chosen for him as the Cave of Tapasya to carry out the spiritual mission he had come to fulfil. It became also a foreordained meeting place when from Paris the Mother arrived here four years later. It was the high Destiny that had guided them and brought them together. They had a task to do and the calling was upon the possibilities of the spirit entering into the dynamics of life. About it Sri Aurobindo wrote in an early letter that it was a severe and painful work. But it is to that that he had committed himself, unmindful of any hardship or difficulty. God-given and God-won was his strength and in it he attempted all and achieved all. He did what he had come to do.
Two great events had preceded this arrival of Sri Aurobindo here in Pondicherry. He had just in one year experienced both the passive and active aspects of the Brahman, something that takes years and years of yogic sadhana. The first was during his brief visit to Baroda in January 1908 when he was actively engaged in the independence movement of India. Here the Yogi Vishnu Bhaskar Lele gave him some instructions about silencing the mind. Within three days he had the realization, of the static Brahman. The other happened not too long afterwards in Alipore Jail. Sri Aurobindo was charged for acts of sedition and from May 1908 was an under-trial prisoner for one year. In the Jail he had experience of the dynamic nature of the Brahman. During the same period something more remarkable happened. The spirit of Vivekananda would visit him for a fortnight and point out at a bright star up in the sky. Sri Aurobindo came to know the working of the Higher Consciousness leading to Supermind.
It was in the Jail that Sri Aurobindo saw Vasudeva everywhere, in trees, plants, men, in the prisoners, in the court, in all. Here the Gita was placed in his hands and here he received the spiritual guidance. This incarceration had for a while shaken his faith in the protection he believed he unfailingly had while he was in the midst of his political activities. But an assuring voice advised him to wait and see. In truth, however, there was something else that was foreseen and planned for him. He grew calm in that reassurance. He was to renounce all self-will and become the Divine’s passive and faithful instrument. It is in that total submission that his tapas-will began to grow. It became an intense flame blazing in the day as much as in the night. The course of his life was now chartered for a different purpose altogether.
Not too long after his arrival in Pondicherry, and perhaps before 16 January 1912, a detailed programme of Yoga was given to him. This was called Sapta Chatushtaya or the Seven Tetrads,—a system consisting of twenty-eight elements put in seven groups. In their natural and logical order these Chatushtayas are the Chatushtayas of Samata (Equality), Shakti (Force or Power), Vijnana (Truth-Knowledge), Sharira (Body), Karma (Action), Brahman (Reality), and Siddhi (Accomplishment or Perfection). Later in the Arya these seven Chatushtayas were briefly presented in the Yoga of Self-Perfection forming the fourth part of The Synthesis of Yoga. But as the Yoga-Tapasya of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother started to arrive at the nitty-gritty of the physical transformation, the Will of the Divine in the active dynamics became more and more luminously assertive. However, there was always the sense of robust pragmatism in the whole approach. For instance, in his noting dated 13 November 1913 of the Record we have rather a baffling statement of far reaching consequences. While on the one hand it clearly foresees great possibilities of the Avataric work, on the other there is also an unambiguous definition with regard to the results. Sri Aurobindo writes:
A clear distinction must now be made between the vidya-avidya-siddhi [Siddhi of Knowledge-Ignorance] which is constituted by the seven chatushtayas and the higher Amrita [Immortality] in which all limitation is removed and Death etc entirely cease. Only the first will in this life be entirely accomplished.

punyatithi of shivaji maharaj

Shivaji was the founder of the modern Maharashtra state in India. The period when Shivaji was born was one of utter chaos and confusion in India. The Mughal empire was in its decline, The British and the Portuguese had appeared on the scene and had developed territorial ambitions and India was badly fragmented and divided. The people were totally paralyzed and had lost sense of purpose and direction.
The two major influences on the young Shivaji were his mother Jijabai and later Swami Ramdas Samarth,a spiritual teacher. Both of them saw in Shivaji, the man of the hour and one who could revive the morale of the people. Shivaji was groomed in the martial arts,economics,state-craft and the finest moral values of that period. Shivaji realized early that a person without any army, resources or kingdom would have to resort to guile and stratagem,if a sovereign, independent and prosperous kingdom was to be established. There was no concept of nationhood among-st the people . The majority were beholden to the zamindars for their livelihood. Shivaji gathered around him a band of Maratha youngsters, who gladly accepted him as their leader. The Marathas were a strong and hardy people, predominantly farmers and without any military experience. Shivaji provided them with weapons and horses and imparted military training to them.He gave them a vision-Swaraj which means people's rule. In a sense he was the pioneer of Republicanism in India.
At the age of 25, The only tactical advantage he and his men had was that they were familiar with the hilly terrain while the Mughal armies were not. Shivaji crowned himself king of Deccan and refused allegiance to Aurangzeb, the Mughal emperor. Shivaji slowly started encroaching on Mughal territories and expanding his kingdom. Initially Aurangzeb ignored Shivaji, thinking him to be an upstart. However after Shivaji conquered Surat and Pune,he decided to teach Shivaji a lesson and compel him to accept Mughal domination. Shivaji had now tasted blood and had decided to give the powerful Mughals a run for their money! Aurangzeb mainly relied on the Rajputs in his army and he sent an army under Raja Jai Singh to arrest Shivaji. The Rajputs were one of the finest warriors in India. Overwhelmed by the numerical superiority of the Mughal army,Shivaji decided to compromise with the Mughals and surrendered some of his forts to the Mughals and accepted the offer of Aurangzeb to come to Agra.. Shivaji and his young son Sambhaji reached Agra to meet Aurangzeb. Aurangzeb asked Shivaji to merge his kingdom in the Mughal kingdom and accept him as Emperor. Shivaji refused to accept Mughal rule and Aurangzeb ordered his arrest. Shivaji cleverly escaped from Agra and reached his capital Raigad safely. Slowly he re-captured his territories and established the first independent Republic in India. Shivaji had able people from all communities and castes in his army and administration. He had given explicit instructions to his soldiers not to harm any woman or child. Anybody outraging the modesty of a woman was summarily executed. For the first time, the people of Maharashtra had found a sense of belonging and nationhood which prevails till this day. Lokmanya Tilak, one of the pioneers of the Independence movement expanded the concept of Swaraj to include the whole of India!
Shivaji will be remembered with gratitude by the people of India till eternity!

the congress(sic) party!

The Congress party which has presided over the destiny of India since Independence has only made matters worse! All the problems in the country are a legacy of the congress-acute poverty, communalism, undernourishment, disease, illiteracy.gender violence, attacks on SCs&STs,discord between centre and states, worsening relations with Pakistan and breakdown in law and order!
The Congress culture which has been adopted by most parties-hypocrisy, dynasty rule, corruption, electoral malpractices, dictatorship, arbitrariness, unashamed pursuit of power and anti-poor policies, prevails over India.
It is only in the last decade or so that regional parties have emerged posing a serious challenge to the congress monopoly. Coalition politics is here to stay! The congress has succeeded in staying in power only because of lack of understanding between the rest of the parties. Divide and rule has been the official policy of the congress!
The people have arisen and will not tolerate the past practices of all political parties!
Gandhi had wished that the congress party should be dissolved! Let us make his wish come true.
