yeats

The Second Coming
Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again; but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

hour of god

The Hour of God

There are moments when the Spirit moves among men and the breath of the Lord is abroad upon the waters of our being; there are others when it retires and men are left to act in the strength or the weakness of their own egoism. The first are periods when even a little effort produces great results and changes destiny; the second are spaces of time when much labour goes to the making of a little result. It is true that the latter may prepare the former, may be the little smoke of sacrifice going up to heaven which calls down the rain of God's bounty. Unhappy is the man or the nation which, when the divine moment arrives, is found sleeping or unprepared to use it, because the lamp has not been kept trimmed for the welcome and the ears are sealed to the call. But thrice woe to them who are strong and ready, yet waste the force or misuse the moment; for them is irreparable loss or a great destruction. In the hour of God cleanse thy soul of all self-deceit and hypocrisy and vain self-flattering that thou mayst look straight into thy spirit and hear that which summons it. All insincerity of nature, once thy defence against the eye of the Master and the light of the ideal, becomes now a gap in thy armour and invites the blow. Even if thou conquer for the moment, it is the worse for thee, for the blow shall come afterwards and cast thee down in the midst of thy triumph. But being pure cast aside all fear; for the hour is often terrible, a fire and a whirlwind and a tempest, a treading of the winepress of the wrath of God; but he who can stand up in it on the truth of his purpose is he who shall stand; even though he fall, he shall rise again, even though he seem to pass on the wings of the wind, he shall return. Nor let worldly prudence whisper too closely in thy ear; for it is the hour of the unexpected, the incalculable, the immeasurable. Mete not the power of the Breath by thy petty instruments, but trust and go forward. But most keep thy soul clear, even if for a while, of the clamour of the ego. Then shall a fire march before thee in the night and the storm be thy helper and thy flag shall wave on the highest height of the greatness that was to be conquered.

sports and politics

The right offensive has started! The government has decided to cancel the Indo-Pak hockey championship starting from 16th April. It is an attempt to set the clock back. People in both countries want peace and cordial relations. Both countries are facing enormous challenges within and without. Neither can afford confrontation. Sports offer an opportunity to restore a semblance of sanity in the beleaguered polity. Both teams enjoy immense popularity in both countries,yet the governments in both countries are playing into the hands of the hardliners.
Even at the height of the cold war both USA& USSR showed enough sagacity to maintain sporting links between both countries!
I earnestly appeal to the people of both countries to pressurize their respective governments to de-link sports from politics!

c v raman

Sir C V Raman was the first Asian,non-white scientist to be awarded the Noble Prize for Physics in 1930. He discovered the "Raman effect' which explains the scattering of light and consequent change in its wave-length when it meets a transparent object. Raman always told science students in India, that what is needed for a scientist to excel is an earnest spirit of inquiry and not expensive equipment. The ' Raman effect' was discovered with the help of an instrument worth Rs.200/-. Today it is extensively used by companies overseas to produce laser scanners used at airports and other places.
Sir C V Raman truly laid the foundations of scientific research in India. He was instrumental in setting up the Indian Institute of Science at Bangalore. He was in close touch with all the scientists of his day in Europe and India. It is unfortunate that Indian scientists have not been able to capitalize on the work done by him.
Bharatratna Raman was very disappointed with the state of scientific research in India and felt that Indian scientists lacked originality and were camp-followers of western scientists!

pushp ki abhilasha( a flower's desire)

पुष्प की अभिलाषा
- माखनलाल चतुर्वेदी (Makhanlal Chaturvedi)

Makhanlal Chaturvedi Translation: The Yearning of a Flower Desireth not to be on the young lass’ Tresses…living twice all over, Desireth not to be in a garland Binding, enticing young lovers, Desireth not to rest on the mortals Of Emperors – aren’t we equally God’s own? Desireth not to be on the heads of Gods To take pride in mere fortune, Pick me out, O Gardener! Strew me on the path that the Brave tread To sacrifice for Motherland! Let me, in obeisance, bow my head!

decline of america

These are truly revolutionary times! America which dominated the 20th century is now in decline. Countries in Asia,Latin America,Middle-East and Africa have quietly started asserting themselves. The voices of the poor and the oppressed are beginning to be heard again. The dictators and other autocratic regimes which had been supported by the US are shaking in their boots. Some have been toppled and others are on their way out. A new spring is round the corner!
This is a great time for long dwarfed cultures like the Asiatic,the African and Latin-American to begin asserting themselves and start challenging the decadent western culture! We can retain democracy,individual freedom and science while rejecting individualism and state control. New alliances should be forged and new international institutions to protect our interests should be set up. It must be remembered that it is the poor who help the poor and not the rich! The dollar must be replaced by a new reserve currency.It has been responsible for the devaluation of the currencies of Asia and Africa while artificially propping up the western currencies!
Trade patterns must change and any sanctions against Iran,N.Korea,Syria and Russia must be firmly opposed.Sanctions must be imposed against Israel for its unprovoked aggression against Palestine.Europe and America must be forced to allow agricultural imports from the rest of the world. Restrictions on labor movements must be gradually dismantled. Environmental protection should go hand in hand with economic development. Public health,malnutrition,illiteracy,gender-violence and poverty should be the topics for deliberations and discussions.
Let us all work for a new dawn!
