hero-worship

'No individual, howsoever great can make a nation great unless there is a will in the people to be great' Sri Aurobindo
In India, individuals have become more important than issues.Virtually everyday of the year is celebrated as some idiot's birth or death anniversary. The media endlessly debates about the merits and demerits of the individuals.Elections are won and lost depending on the popularity of individuals. Is it surprising that little has changed in India in the last 2000 years?
A progressive culture does not stick to outmoded form or individuals but is continuously adapting itself to the present conditions.Men like Jesus,Mohammed,Ram,Krishna,Shivaji,Lincoln,Guru Nanak,Lenin,Laxmibai,Tilak,Sri Aurobindo,Vivekananda,Patel and Ambedkar always gave importance to the problems of the masses and not to their own well-being.All of them underwent enormous sufferings for the upliftment of the masses. They scrupulously advised their followers to stick to the truth and not to their teachings. They must be all turning in their graves watching how people are exploiting their goodwill.
The cult of the individual is a westwrn phenomenon and is absolutely alien to Indian culture.Ancient India always gave more importance to social, political and cultural issues rather than to individuals.Even the Constitution of India is people-centric and not individual-centric.
