The recent revelations that the US government is monitoring telephone conversations of millions of citizens is nothing unexpected. The US government and its surveillance agencies have been gradually encroaching on Civil Liberties of citizens right from the Mcarthy era. However earlier the US Judiciary which is the custodian of the Constitution was alert and vigilant and ensured that the Government did not exceed its limits. But after 9/11 and Operation Infinite Justice the Judiciary has been packed with incompetent and autocratic Judges who have no regard for the Constitution or Civil Liberties. Whether it be The Patriot Act,women's rights, transparency in the functioning of the state,privacy of citizens,Guantanamo Bay or social justice,the Supreme Court has been taking a retrograde and perverse stand. It has allowed the State to run amok and subvert the Constitution in the name of national security. The US today has become like Germany in the pre-war period or China today.
Noam Chomsky has rightly said that " America is a society of slaves!" Today America is governed not by the Congress but by a small group of corporate bosses who command 99% of the wealth and are determining the destiny of America.
America today is like the Roman Empire in its period of decline!
