Transparency and democracy go hand in hand! All the political parties should welcome the CIC judgment holding that political parties are accountable under the RTI Act. All over the world there has been a shift towards openness,accountability and transparency in public life. It is a well known fact that one of the reasons for the drastic increase in black money in the economy is the unaccounted money received by political parties from dubious sources.
The political parties should open their affairs to public scrutiny. This will increase their credibility in the public eye and could later on pave the way for public funding of elections. It is not surprising that the Congress party which is the fountainhead of corruption in the country is opposing this new development. Very little is known about the assets and income of the UPA chairperson and her son.
If the political parties fail to read the writing on the wall, they will soon become irrelevant
