Today is Shiv Jayanti! It is a day to remind ourselves of Chhatrapati Shivaji and his bravery, valour and ideals.
The times today are no different from the times when Shivaji appeared on the scene. At that time also there was an autocratic and despotic government in Delhi, the honour of women was under threat,misrule was rampant, the poor and the destitute were struggling for survival and there was a lack of vision and purpose amongst all sections of society!
Shivaji under the able guidance of his mother Jijabai and Guru Samarth Ramdas set about the formidable task of building a sovereign, independent state committed to the ideals of morality,upliftment of the poor and marginalized,safety of women and law and order. From scratch he built an army of 100000 well equipped men to take on the might of the mighty Mughals. He declared himself as Emperor of Deccan and accountable only to God. He was the first men to have a truly pan-Indian vision and would have been successful in achieving it also if he had received support from the Rajputs, who favoured Aurangzeb. In that case the English could never have succeeded in getting a foothold in India and the history of India would have been different!

हृदायस्त झाला नारायण, प्रेरणा केली || ८ ||
उदंड पंडित पुराणिक, कविश्वर यज्ञिक वैदिक |
धूर्त तार्किक सभानायक, तुमचे ठायी || ९ ||
या भूमंडळाचे ठायी, धर्म रक्षी ऐसा नाही |
महाराष्ट्रधर्म राहिला काही, तुम्हा करीता || १० ||
आणखी काही धर्म चालती, श्रीमंत होउनी कित्येक असती |
धन्य धन्य तुमची कीर्ति, विस्तारली || ११ ||
कित्येक दुष्ट संहारिले, कित्येकांस धाक सुटले |
कित्येकांसी आश्रय झाले, शिवकल्याण राजा || १२ ||
तुमचे देशी वास्तव्य केले, परन्तु वर्त्तमान नाही घेतले |
ऋणानुबन्धे विस्मरण जाहले, बा काय नेणु || १३ ||
सर्वज्ञ मंडळी धर्ममूर्ति, सांगणे काय तुम्हा प्रति |
धर्मास्थापनेची कीर्ति, सांभाळली पाहिजे || १४ ||
उदंड राजकारण तटले, तेथे चित्त विभागले |
प्रसंग नसता लिहिले, क्षमा केली पाहिजे || १५ ||
