the reality of panchayati raj in india

The Union Government allocates several hundreds of thousands of crores to panchayati raj institutions in India every year with the ostensible intention of decentralizing power to villages. The grim reality is that 70% of the funds allocated goes into the pockets of politicians and middle men. The schools are in a mess, there is no power.no water,no public toilets,no decent eating places and no public health facilities. All decisions are taken by a small clique without consulting the villagers. The same people manage to get elected year after year. Neither the Sarpanch nor the committee members are ever found in the office. The Governments proudly claim that all panchayats have been connected by internet but there is hardly any awareness about IT among st the people.
I tried to organise a cultural programme today to highlight the incidents of growing violence against women at my expense, but the Gram Panchayat at Bhilar refused permission at the last minute. It was to be a programme with folk songs, street play and snacks. Everyone was invited.
An extremely sorry state of affairs!
