an attempt to put the clock back

Just when it appeared that better times were ahead, the pope has called on the faithful to boycott goods made by firms engaging persons from the unorganised sector. It is obvious that the pope is acting at the behest of powerful commercial interests who are facing a threat to their supremacy. This clearly establishes the nexus between organised religion and big business.Surely,it will be followed by greater immigration curbs, protectionism, crackdown on civil rights groups and increased military intervention in Africa and elsewhere by the western powers.
A coordinated strategy will have to be worked out by all progressive forces across the globe to counter this attempt to put the clock back.
Since the trend of events is in favour of transparency and freedom of expression and belief, the youth will have to show more daring, enterprise and innovation than before to ensure that democratic values are not supressed.
A greater engagement with the common people, use of social media and reaching out to the marginalised communities.
It is a 'make or break' situation,
