road accidents in india

India enjoys the dubious distinction of having the highest number of fatal road accidents in the world-almost 250000 people die annually on Indian roads.
Road accident deaths are a symptom of a diseased society-apathy,indiscipline,lack of civic sense, corruption and short sightedness which permeate every aspect of life in India.
The government is spending enormous amounts on constructing highways but very little to improve traffic conditions in cities and towns where the maximum casualties take place.Hundreds of thousands of vehicles of all shapes and sizes pass every day on Indian roads which are in a pathetic shape. On most roads there are no traffic signals, zebra crossings or foot paths and everyone fends for himself.Overloading, poor maintenance, drunken driving and speeding are the norm rather than the exception.Unmanned railway crossings are responsible for a large number of fatal accidents involving school buses.
If India wants to be considered a civilized nation,it must drastically improve its road-safety record.
