Charlie Chaplin-actor,director,comedian,creator and writer,all roiled in one! I dont know of any other actor in the world who has influenced cinema so much. He was born during "The Depression" when dark forces were threatening to engulf the world. There was cynicism,hatred,violence and general gloom across the world.
For Chaplin acting was not a vocation but a mission-to change things! His movies are a satire on society-politicians,corporations,religion and tyranny.The underlying theme in all his movies-love,humanity,decency and compassion. He had tremendous sympathy for the underdog. He was persecuted for his beliefs by the American government and branded a 'communist'!
His movies-Gold Rush,Monsieur Verdoux,The Dictator and Modern Times are all masterpieces and remain unsurpassed even today. His acting was of such a high caliber that speech was not necessary.
In the present times when humor has become crass and empty, Chaplin's movies are a source of great laughter and give us hope and a sense of optimism about the future! Long live Charlie Chaplin!
