'Never fear to negotiate,but never negotiate out of fear!'JFK. He was the 35th President of America and the youngest. Of Irish descent he had the characteristic irreverence of all authority! Throughout his childhood and youth JFK was always challenging conventions. His father had made his fortune by selling liquor during The Prohibition era in America. His father had high hopes of all his children and had predicted that one of them would become the President of America!
JFK served gallantly in the Navy during World WarII winning the Order of Honour! He also sustained a back injury which troubled him throughout his career. Driven by his ambitious father JFK joined the Democratic party and entered politics. This was the period when the Civil Rights movement had started demanding equal rights for The Blacks(sic)! The US Supreme Court had struck down segregation in the famous Brown case.The Economy was in trouble with inflation and unemployment high. Abroad,the Soviet Union was emerging out of the shadow of Stalinism but the idea of global domination was strong!
JFK defeated Nixon to become the President in 1961. He quickly broke away from the mainstream and decided to adopt innovative measures to restore American supremacy. He opened dialogue with Martin Luther King Jr and assured him that he would cooperate with him to make The Blacks equal citizens and adopted the policy of positive discrimination. Federal Marshals were sent to Missisippi and other states in the US were slavery was still prevalent. Terrorist organisations like Ku Klux Klan and others were banned and their leaders arrested. JFK appointed Blacks to important positions in his administration and restored a semblance of balance in society. He started talks with Khrushchev,Gen.Secy.CPSU to end the cold war and begin a new era in US-Soviet Union relationship. Both of them realized that confrontation was futile and cooperation and peace were the only way to break the deadlock! He proposed Nuclear Disarmament and ban on nuclear testing.The Soviets responded positively.
Under JFK's dynamic leadership the US started its space programme, introduced new initiatives in education, reduced taxes and started social welfare programmes which boosted the economy! He introduced several initiatives to empower women.Just when it appeared that America would lead the world to a better future he was assassinated in Dallas at the age of 46! A promising career cut short untimely.
