akbar

Jalal-ud-din mohammed Akbar, son of Mughal emperor Humayun, and disciple of Sufi saint khwaja moinuddin Chisti, was one of the greatest of all Indian rulers. He was only 13 when he ascended the throne after the death of his father. A tremendously brave man,he was a great leader of men. Though illiterate, he was an extremely good judge of character and attracted learned men of all religions to his court. His advisers, known as Navratnas, were men like Birbal,Todarmal.Man singh,Tansen,Abul Fazl and Bairam Khan.
The Mughals though from Iran had quickly assimilated the Indian culture and had adopted a policy of assimilation and tolerance. They were known for their secular views and never tried to impose Islam on anyone. They married Hindu women and gave Hindus important positions in the army and administration.
During Akbar's rule India enjoyed a period of great prosperity and harmony. He was known for his sense of fair play and compassion. He founded a new religion Din-e-ilahi,inspired by Sufism, was a combination of Hinduism and Islam. It could not get many adherents because it was ahead of its times.
Akbar was also a keen patron of fine arts and encouraged musicians, painters and dancers. He built many palaces and forts all over India including Fatehpur Sikri which is a blend of Hindu and Islamic principles.
