Generals have become politicians now-N.K Singh,Ramdas,the present COAS and others! They have realized that politics is more remunerative than being a soldier. In the process they have decided to abandon their honour,dignity and valour.
The politicians are the real culprits who are using the armed forces to tackle law and order problems. The AFSPA has given draconian powers to the armed forces-arrest,interrogate,shoot and detain anyone without permission. Large parts of India are under army rule. It forebodes ill for Indian democracy which could easily become a dictatorship!
The Constitution does not envisage any role for the military in administration. The Armed forces are intended to be the defenders of the nation when its sovereignty is threatened by external aggression. Their hierarchy is so designed that government interference is minimal and promotions are to be strictly on merit.
Today the Generals are making statements on political issues and joining political parties. They have become media-savvy and started expressing opinions on matters of state.
Field Marshal Manekshaw who led India to victory in the 1971 war had the guts to bluntly tell the then PM Indira Gandhi to mind her own business when she presumptuously tried to teach him military strategy!
The Armed Forces should remember their code of honour-bravery,courage and valour above all!
