Chavez-demagogue,revolutionary,man of the masses and autocrat! He dominated Latin american politics for 14 years and changed it for the better. He liberated Venezuela and many other countries in Latin America from the US influence annoying it no end. The two countries had a love-hate relationship,the US needing oil and Venezuela its refining facilities.
In 1999, Venezuela was a backward country with high levels of poverty,malnutrition,high illiteracy,social unrest,crime and corruption. Today Venezuela has the fastest growing economy in Latin America with rising incomes,high agricultural growth,high exports and a stable currency. It has a democratic government with a strong opposition,free media and enjoys good relations with all its neighbors.
Chavez,inspired by Castro, developed his own brand of socialism,to meet the challenges of Venezuela. His primary objective was to ensure a life of dignity for the masses by peaceful means. Today Chavez is the most admired leader in Latin America!
India should have taken this opportunity to revive its links with Latin America by sending its FM to Venezuela to attend Chavez's funeral but Indian foreign policy has become so US-centric that unless it gets a nod from Obama,the government does not do anything!
