Hanuman was the son of Anjani and Marut-wind god.His mother had done severe penace to Marut and was blessed with a divine child. As a child hanuman was always upto pranks and even tried to swallow the Sun.As a child, his mother had sworn him to life-long celibacy which she said would endow him with extra-ordinary mental and physical strength.
Hanuman came into contact with Lord Rama,Sita and Laxman when they were wandering in the Dandakaranya forest and protecting the Rishis from the Asuras. On the first meeting he swore eternal allegiance to Rama.
When Ravana kidnapped Sita and took her to Lanka,Rama sent hanuman to find about her well-being.Hanuman flew to Lanka and after meeting Sita,he was captured and produced before Ravana.Ravana, wanting to teach Hanuman a lesson, set his tail alight  and Hanuman promptly razed the entire Lanka to the ground and returned safely to Rama.
When Laxma was grievously injured in the battle with Indrajit,Rama sent Hanuman to bring medicinal herbs which grew on Kishikanda mountain.Hanuman, lacking knowledge of herbs lifted the mountain and produced it before Rama.
Hanuman is considered as the god of strength by Indians and there are many Hanuman temples all over India.Traditionally women are forbidden from entering Hanuman temples.
