Punjab,the land of 5 rivers-Beas,Sutlej,Jhelum,Chenab and Yamuna,was also known as the land of milk and honey.Originally Punjab stretched from Afghanistan in the north to Delhi in the south.Blessed with a fertile soil,abundant water and sturdy farmers,Punjab was the granary of India-wheat,rice,milk,poultry,fruits and vegetables were in abundance.
Punjab also has a strong martial tradition-right from Guru Tegh Bahadur to Ranjit Singh and even today Punjab contributes the maximum manpower to the Indian Armed forces.
The Punjabis are an enterprising and daring people who believe in enjoying life to the hilt.They are fond of good cuisine,wine,clothes and dance.Till recent times they dominated the Hindifilm industry,Prithviraj Kapoor,Balraj Sahni,Dev Anand,Dharmendra,Sunil Dutt,Pran,Raj Kapoor,B.R. Chopra and Subhash Ghei are household names in India.
Undivided Punjab also produced outstanding authors and poets-Iqbal,Manto,Ismat Chugtai,Rajinder Singh Bedi and Amrita Pritam.Amrita Sher Gill,Amarnath Sehgal and satish Gujral are world famous painters and sculptors.
The partition of India took the heaviest toll on Punjab as thousands of innocent men,women and children were killed in cold blood or uprooted from their native soil.
